How much is a Vanier Scholarship? 2022-23

The Canadian government established the Vanier CGS program in 2008 to improve Canada’s capacity to draw in and hold on to the best Ph.D.

students from around the globe and to position Canada as a global hub of excellence in research and higher education. How much is a Vanier Scholarship?

The size of the Vanier scholarship One of Canada’s most esteemed graduation awards, the Vanier is given out at a rate of $50,000 each year for three years. International students, Canadian citizens, and people with permanent residence status are all eligible to apply. Before January 2024, all applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctorate program.

will assess all eligible nominations to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program (SSHRC).

Graduate scholarships from Vanier Canada are given out following a stringent assessment process.

The three equally weighted selection criteria will be examined for each nomination, and the candidates will then be ranked according to the average of these criteria.

The Tri-Agency Programs (TAP) Steering Committee will be presented with the ranked list of all nominations for their approval.

The final list of up to 166 Vanier Scholars each year will be approved by the TAP Steering Committee, which is composed of the presidents of the three federal funding organizations, as well as the deputy ministers of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada and Health Canada.

Given that the Vanier CGS program’s goal is to be an internationally competitive scholarship program that enables Canada to draw top-tier doctoral students (a crucial aspect that sets it apart from other federal scholarship programs), and given that organizations are reluctant to nominate foreign candidates.

Make sure to get in touch with the institution that nominated you and let them know that you’re interested in applying for the Vanier CGS. Basically, make sure they have a Vanier CGS quota and learn any pertinent information.

How to apply for Vanier scholarship

Those wanting to apply for a Vanier CGS should confirm that the institution to which they are applying for doctoral studies has a Vanier CGS quota.

Applicants must use ResearchNet to draft, complete, and submit their applications.
Before the application is reviewed, any information that is not necessary or goes over the allowed number of characters or pages will be eliminated.
To verify that their application is complete, applicants must preview every part of it.
Fill out the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS): Voluntary Self-Identification Form for Indigenous Applicants [PDF (253 KB)] if you want to self-identify as an Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, and/or Métis) applicant to your Canadian university. and submitting it through their app. Please be advised that the members of the selection committee will not be informed of whether applicants identify as Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, or Métis).
An application cannot be legally accepted by the Vanier-Banting Secretariat until the ResearchNet “Consent and Submit” task has been finished.

The scientific contributions do not exceed a page in length.
A personal statement that highlights the candidate’s leadership abilities

In the same academic year, qualified candidates may apply to both the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program and other agency-specific doctoral-level scholarship/fellowship programs (whether to the same or a different federal granting agency).

This is allowed as long as the proposed research for each application is in line with the goals of the federal granting agency to which it is being submitted. Please see Identify field of research for further details.

Candidates who place well in both competitions must decide which award they want to receive.

Please take note that while eligibility requirements, evaluation standards, and competition deadlines vary, Vanier CGS applications are not taken into account for agency-specific doctorate award competitions. Applying for each program separately is required.

Vanier Canada graduate scholarship eligibility

Before you submit an application for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, be sure that both you and the institution that nominated you satisfy the requirements listed below (Vanier CGS).

All nominations will be ruled disqualified if they don’t match the requirements.

Candidates for a Vanier CGS may be Canadian citizens, Canadian permanent residents, or foreign nationals.

If you want to be given a Vanier CGS, you must:

intend to undertake full-time doctoral (or joint graduate research program, such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., or JD/Ph.D.) studies and research at the nominating institution in the summer semester or the academic year after the release of results
as of May 1, 2023, have completed no more than 20 months of full-time study in your doctoral program
After a Master’s degree was earned, the Ph.D. program would start. The date of doctorate enrollment is used to compute the number of study months completed.
have no more than 32 months of full-time study remaining in your doctoral program by May 1, 2023 (i.e., combined graduate research program, accelerated, previously enrolled without earning a Master’s degree).
engaged in a dual Ph.D. program, such as an MD/Ph.D., MA/Ph.D., or DVM/Ph.D. Whether or whether they had previously been enrolled in a Master’s program, candidates in this group are eligible for the 32-month window
Beginning on the day an applicant is formally registered in the joint program (including the Master’s component of the program), the number of months of study is determined.

The Vanier scholarship awards are for doctoral studies (or combination MA/Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. degrees). In order to attract and keep top-tier doctoral students and to position Canada as a global hub of excellence in research and higher education, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) was established.

As a requirement for completion of the program, an eligible doctoral program must have a significant research component that results in the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that has been merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level.

If they feature a sizable autonomous research component, as mentioned above, clinically oriented programs of study, such as clinical psychology, as well as joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D.) are also eligible programs.

Both English and French-language application materials may be submitted individually. Give a French or English explanation if another language is necessary to describe a specific concept (such as one that requires specialized terminology).

Competition process

You can start an application in one of two ways. Either:

the student communicates their intention to apply to the Vanier CGS program to the graduate studies faculty at the chosen university

The institution contacts the chosen candidate to start the nomination process.

The student creates applications and submits them using the ResearchNet application system to the nominating university by their internal deadline (specified in ResearchNet by the nominating institution).

The internal candidate selection process is carried out by the nominated institution.

By November 1, 2022, the nominating organization sends the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) preferred nominations (20:00 Eastern Time).

The review procedure is coordinated by the Secretariat.

The Tri-Agency Programs (TAP) Steering Committee is presented with the recommendations by the Secretariat.

Final decisions for the Vanier CGS program are endorsed and approved by the TAP Steering Committee.

The results of the competition are communicated to the nominated candidates in April 2023.

Vanier scholarship Deadlines

The competition for the years 2022–2023 has two deadlines:

Institutional deadline: A second due date and time will display at the top of each page after the student has identified the institution suggested for PhD studies in ResearchNet (see Task 10). Your application must be submitted to the institution through ResearchNet by this date. Each institution determines and controls this deadline. After this certain day and time, your application cannot be submitted.

By November 1, 2022, institutions must submit their finalized nominations to the Vanier CGS program (20:00 Eastern Time).
