Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program was established by the Canadian government in 2008 to increase Canada’s ability to attract and maintain world-class doctoral students and to build Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher education.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) administers the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program and is responsible for award payments.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Amount

The Vanier is one of Canada’s most distinguished graduation scholarships, worth $50,000 annually for three years.


  • Applicants can be citizens of Canada, permanent residents of Canada, and international students
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctorate program by January 2025.
  • Applicants must be pursuing their first doctoral degree (this includes a combination of undergraduate/graduate research programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD).
  • Applicants must have completed no more than 20 months of full-time study in their Ph.D. program by May 1, 2024
  • Applicants must have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program, by May 1, 2024, if enrolled in a joint graduate research program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD, DVM/PhD.
  • Applicants must have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctorate program by May 1, 2024, if expedited directly from a Bachelor’s to a Ph.D. (no time spent in a Master’s program)
  • Applicants must have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctorate program by May 1, 2024, if expedited directly from a Bachelor’s to a Ph.D. (no time spent in a Master’s program)
  • Applicants must have earned a first-class average (GPA of at least 3.5 on the University of Alberta grading system) in each of the previous two years of full-time study (or equivalent).
