In order to foster the burgeoning entrepreneurial potential in Southern Africa, the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation was established in 2005 as part of Allan Gray’s overall mission to make a sustainable, long-term contribution to the region.

The Scholarship Program aims to instill in young people an entrepreneurial mindset so that they can continue Southern Africa’s economic and social transformation and address historical inequities.

Allan gray scholarship schools

Students who are now in Grade 6 (and will be entering Grade 8 in 2024) and who have high entrepreneurial potential, strong academic performance, and financial needs are eligible for the scholarship.

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is inviting students to apply for their High School Scholarship, for the 2024 academic year.

Scholars will be sent by the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation to their chosen partner schools, which may include:

Eastern Cape:

  • Boys: Selborne College / Grey High School / St. Andrew’s College (Grahamstown)
  • Girls: Collegiate Girls’ High School / Clarendon High School For Girls / Diocesan School for Girls (Grahamstown)
  • Co-Ed Schools: Hudson Park High School (Boarding/Day School) / Alexander Road High School (Day School)

Free State:

What does Allan gray scholarship cover

The following costs will be covered by the scholarship:

  • Tuition fees
  • Boarding
  • Stationery
  • Textbooks
  • Uniforms
  • Casual clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Support for extra murals and
  • A monthly allowance.

Additionally, academics will have access to the following:

  •  Workshops
  • Speakers and seminars
  • Annual entrepreneurial conference
  • Online learning campus
  • Mentorship by a program officer and
  • A like-minded community

Allan gray scholarship selection process

  • Apply (online or through the aforementioned application form) and send the necessary supporting documentation
  • The Foundation exam in Mathematics and English for Grade 6 will be needed of successful applicants in December 2022.
  • Interview invitations for qualified candidates will be sent out in February to March 2023.
  • Interviews with applicants will be held at placement schools.
  • The grant will be given to candidates who earn recommendations from placement schools.
  • The Memorandum of Agreement will be signed by the Foundation, placement school, and the Scholar’s custodian upon the awarding of the scholarship.

 

Allan gray scholarship requirements

  • You must be a resident of South Africa.
  • The minimum age requirement is between 11 and 12 years old (not older and not younger)
  • For the 2022 academic year, you must be in grade six.
  • You must demonstrate financial need, and your household’s combined income cannot exceed R20,000 per month.
  • You must have received a grade of at least 70% in both English and mathematics in grades 5 and 6.
  • A minimum overall grade point average of 70% in grades 5 and 6 is required.
  • You must have the following qualities to be an entrepreneur: a growth mindset (the conviction that your intelligence can be developed), self-efficacy, leadership (the capacity to positively influence others), opportunity identification, the capacity to recognize valuable opportunities, curiosity, the capacity to explore and learn new information, and problem-solving (able to find ways to creatively solve problems)

Along with your completed application form, send in clear copies of the following supporting documents (submitting these documents is required; if any are missing, your application may be rejected):

  • Birth certificate in full (certified copy)
  • ID document (certified copy)
  • A current, passport-size photo (black and white)
  • IDs for parents or guardians (certified copies)
  • Grade 5 term 4 reports (certified copy)
  • Grade 5 term 1 or term 2 report (certified copy)
  • The guardians or parents Proof of income (original affidavit if unemployed; certified copies of most recent paystubs and three months’ worth of bank statements if employed; certified copies of income tax returns and six months’ worth of business account bank statements if self-employed; certified copies of pension income, as applicable);
  • If the parents have passed away, the death certificate
  • If parents are divorced: a divorce decree
  • Proof of legal guardianship is required if residing with a guardian.

Currently, the scholarship is available to Matric students pursuing undergraduate degree programs in the following fields:

  • Arts
  • Commerce
  • Engineering
  • Health Science (excluding Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science)
  • Humanities
  • Law
  • Science

By encouraging entrepreneurship among Fellows and ensuring that the Program results in students looking to establish entrepreneurial opportunities, the Fellowship Program seeks to assist students.

Candidates who are accepted will be enrolled as Candidate Allan Gray Fellows. Up to 100 fellowships are given out by the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation each year to outstanding students.

The closing date for the Allan gray scholarship is 30th September 2022 (at 17:00 SAST).
